You find criss cross shoestring lace on many shoe styles, from sneakers to oxfords. The criss cross method allows you to loosen the laces easily so that you can slide the shoes on and off without trouble. If you don’t have any fit problems with your shoes and don’t have any foot issues, such as a high arch or narrow heels, the criss cross method will work well. Start the criss cross lacing by threading the two ends of the shoestring up through the bottom two eyelets. Bring the ends of the shoestring over to the next eyelets up on the opposite sides. The laces will form an "X." Continue to lace the shoes until you run out of eyelets.

If your shoes chafe against the top of your foot or if you have high arches, you may want to lace your sneakers using the gap method. Leave a gap in the lacing around the area that chafes or over the arches. Start lacing the shoes as you would for the standard criss cross method. If you’re lacing around an irritated area, lace the shoestrings until you get to that spot. Instead of crossing over to the opposite eyelet, thread the ends of the shoelace through the next eyelet on the same side, so that the shoestrings don’t push on the chafed area. Once you’re above the chafed area, continue lacing as usual. If you’re lacing around a high arch, use the criss cross method for the first two sets of eyelets only, then thread through the eyelets on the same side.

Lacing your shoestrings straight across, instead of in a criss cross pattern, looks tidy and can help relieve pressure on the toes. Push the ends of the shoestrings down through the two eyelets on the bottom. Bring the end of the shoelace up through the next eyelet on the right, then over to the eyelet on the left side. Bring the other end of the lace up through the third eyelet on the left, then over to the third eyelet on the right side. You’ll have three rows of lacing straight across. Continue lacing until all the eyelets are laced. The straight lacing method works best on shoes with an even number of eyelets.
