The National Do Not Call Registry is a formal list that consumers sign up for which removes their phone numbers from telemarketers call lists. Basically, this law went into affect after an overwhelming number of consumer complaints caused the Federal Trade Commission to amend the Telemarketing Sales Rule. Telemarketers are no longer allowed to call any one that has their phone number registered on the National Do Not call List.
If a telemarketer knowingly or unknowingly calls a registered phone number, the fine imposed could run as high as $11,000 per offense. As a result, telemarketing companies are quickly changing the way they conduct business. Many companies even use Do Not Call software which helps them to more easily and quickly identify the numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry, thus preventing any violations.
You can register up to three numbers at one time, which will remain on the list for five years. You can have your number removed at any time, and you can re register your number after the five years has expired.
