William Simpson, president and general manager of the Co Op, said there are some issues involving restocking the t shirts. UConn and its athletic department has an exclusive contract with Nike to produce the T shirt.
"That’s part of the issue," Simpson said. "We’re in the process of working through a couple of things. Right now the issues is, is it possible for Nike to make more shirts or will Nike allow that shirt to be made by somebody else in this sort of special circumstance? We’re working both with our sales representatives as well as with athletics to try to see if we can pull that off. Nike traditionally makes everything up in one manufacturing run. When they’re gone they’re gone."
There’s a groundswell on campus for students to wear the No. 6 jersey’s to UConn’s next home game on Oct. 31 against Rutgers at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.
"If Nike allows it to be manufactured by somebody else, it’s possible that we could get a lot more in before that game, particularly if we can work with a vendor here in Connecticut," Simpson said. "That’s what we’re striving for. I think athletics can help apply the pressure to make it happen."
Simpson said they if they are able to get new stock that profits from the t shirt sales will be donated to some sort of fund in involving Howard’s family.
