?George Washington’s troops couldn’t appreciate this magnificent scenery not while doing military drills or sleeping overnight in freezing temperatures. The bitter winter of 1779 80 was enough to make any man miserable, and many of the 10,000 soldiers who were camped here perished for lack of food and clothing and the unrelenting blizzards. Hiking on a subzero day may give you some idea of what they went through, but warm clothing, sturdy shoes, and trail mix makes a big difference. So does having the time to enjoy the solitude, the flora and fauna, and the sights and sound of a meandering stream. Plan on exploring Wick House (circa 1750) after the hike. Docents describe how Henry Wick prospered by logging and farming his 800 acres of timberland and open fields and how the house was used by Maj. Gen. Arthur St. Clair, while he served as commander of the Pennsylvania Line during the Revolutionary War.
