What you have to do is to make sure you get the engine to TDC (top dead center) on the compression stroke,

The way you determine it is at TDC on the compression stroke, is to place your finger over the spark plug hole on the number 1 cylinder, and have someone barely turn the engine with the starter. You want the starter to engage as little as possible, so that the engine turns very little. This way you wont go past TDC. What you are looking for is a big rush of pressure. When you feel this pressure, the engine is coming up on the compression stroke. Stop cranking it and manually turn the engine until it is at TDC. Install the distributor and turn the body of the distributor until the rotor is pointing directly at one of the plug wire terminals in the cap. Lock the distributor down in this position. The terminal the rotor is pointing at will be your number one cylinders wire. Then set the plug wires up in the direction the distributor rotates, the order I believe is 153624. You can set up number one in any position as long as the engine is at TDC on the compression stroke, and you point the rotor at any terminal on the cap, then go through and set up the firing order. You might have to perform fine adjustments to get it to fire up. You can use a timing light while cranking it with the starter to dial the timing in closer.
