Alpine Trekkers are a handy contraption made and sold by Back Country Access, a Colorado based company specializing in technical equipment for backcountry skiing and snowboarding. The concept the Trekkers is to convert your regular alpine ski bindings into touring Nike Air Foamposite One bindings by giving them the ability to hinge. The Trekkers clip into standard ski bindings just like ski boots and then attach via a Air Jordan DMP rear clamping mechanism. They can be adjusted to different size bindings and boots with relative ease. When it’s time to ski downhill, it’s a simple matter of removing the Trekkers, and climbing skins, then clipping your boots directly in to the skis as usual. In theory, when combined with climbing skins, Air Jordan 1s Alpine Trekkers give you the ability to travel in the backcountry almost as efficiently as a telemark or randonee setup.
So what is the downside to Alpine Trekkers? The most obvious is the extra weight added by the Trekkers and by using your downhill setup which is probably significantly heavier than your typical backcountry gear. Also the Trekkers can be unstable on steep and uneven terrain due to being an extra 2 inches off of the ground. The Trekkers can twist out of the bindings if too much side pressure is put on them. This doesn’t break anything but can be very annoying or even dangerous in certain situations. Because of the weight and awkwardness, I would recommend using Trekkers for relatively short trips until you know what you are getting yourself into. On the plus side, they are very durably built and seem to last a long time without problems.
I’d recommend the Trekkers for skiers looking to test out the backcountry without dropping serious money. If you’re currently accessing the backcountry by using snow shoes and strapping your skis on your back, these are a must have. Skiers who just want the stability of using their downhill skis instead of randonee or tele might also find them a good compromise.
