?Through this craft, children examine the many different types of shoes there are. Provide children with magazines and store circulars, construction paper, scissors and glue. Instruct children to look through the magazines and cut out any images of shoes that they find. Have them glue the shoe pictures they have cut out onto the piece of construction paper any way they would like. After creating their collages, discuss the different types of shoes that are featured in the artwork and the reasons why they are worn or the types of events at which they may be worn.
Have children decorate shoe pictures with pieces of torn paper. Print out a picture of a pair of shoes or draw a pair of shoes; photocopy the images and distribute them to children. Set out different colored construction and tissue paper and instruct children to tear the paper into small pieces. Have them glue the torn pieces of paper onto the pictures of the shoes. Encourage them to try to make different designs and patterns. While children are decorating their shoes, discuss the different colors they are using to reinforce color recognition.
In this craft activity, children decorate actual flip flops, which they can keep and wear. Purchase inexpensive children’s flip flops in a generic color, such as white or black. Distribute a pair of flip flops to each student and discuss why and where this type of shoe may be worn. Provide children with glitter glue, foam shapes, silk flower and faux gemstones. Guide them as they glue the materials onto the thongs of the flip flops. Once the materials have dried onto the flip flops, allow children to wear and show off their one of a kind shoes.
Children can use shoes to create unusual paintings. When an area department store or shoe store has a super sale, purchase a few pairs of shoes. You’ll find shoes for a few dollars. Keep in mind that the style and size of the shoes don’t matter, as they going to be used for a painting project. In class, fill paper plates with a shallow layer of tempera paint. Instruct children to dip the soles of the shoes into the paint and then press them onto sheets of paper. Have them make as many prints as they’d like of these abstract works of shoe sole art. Paper has been used for everything from record.
