I taken a number of colleagues from the US who are coming here on business on emergency shopping trips (to the point where I started an FAQ for them to read to make this less painful for me ; ) Here an extract that might be relevant.
Edit: As some people are getting their knickers in a twist, let me clarify that I not claiming Europeans are sartorial Gods (Germans have already been highlighted as mortal ; ), neither that Americans are clueless. Nor am I claiming that unless you follow this list people will point and stare at you Invasion of the Body Snatchers Style ; ) What I am claiming is that there are differences in dress code which the original requester asked for. As one commenter has already remarked, it would be interesting to have a reverse list for spotting the Brit, Frenchman or Italian in the US.
