Actually yes. I saw plans (schematics and build data) for these back when the first film dropped. They did exist in meatspace, and scientific people claimed they did hover, but you had to pump them up with massive switched power source so that you need a huge power cable plugged into the board. Like enough power to feed a factory.
So yes, some people claimed they had the real deal, but not practical and certainly not mobile. I would love to post links, but I haven seen the data since the late 80 and I have been looking since then.
Edit: Love the reddiquette. This is on topic, yet you wankers feel a need to downvote just because you disagree with an experience (mine) that you have no first hand knowledge of. I have been running with them for the past year, every night. Even through icy roads of winter. With a little shoeshine i have gone with them to weddings and funerals. I wear them in forest hikes when geocaching. Just one pair of shoes, that i got from my father. Used. I have used them for 2 3 years probably.
