?Since November, two street crime cruisers have been fitted with reinforced heavy aluminium "push" bumpers. Police are hoping the frame mounted bumpers, originally designed for pushing dead vehicles off the highway, will help reduce the amount of damage sustained when catching criminals.
"They do look pretty impressive on the front of our vehicles," said Const. Jamie MacDonald, program manager of vehicle operations and head driving instructor for recruits.
The new bumpers will help protect the front ends of the cars while boxing in suspect vehicles. MacDonald said the police force hopes boxing in stolen cars more effectively will help prevent them from getting away and triggering dangerous high speed pursuits.
At $250 to $300 apiece, the new push bumpers don cost much more than a regular bumper. Neither of the cruisers has had to put the new gear to the test on the job, but the force recently took them for a test run on its private track.
