Media mogul Rupert Murdoch has launched his latest publication, The Daily, and there’s not a trace of ink or paper in sight. Digital newspapers are nothing new most daily papers are available as apps or downloads but these attempts are normally limited to replicating the print edition. Will the iPad only Daily be able to do things differently?First impressions suggest The Daily is a strange combination of a physical newspaper and online title. New editions are published each morning, providing a news package you can actually finish reading rather than the infinite expanse of the web, but editors also have the ability to insert breaking news stories when necessary. You can read each edition linearly like a paper, or select individual pages with an iTunes style flowing interface. There’s even a shuffle feature and photographs can be interactive 360 degree panoramas, or expand when the iPad is turned on its side. It’s not an exact replica of your breakfast broadsheet each new edition replaces the previous version, and there’s no easy way to access an archive but The Daily hopes to tempt people away from print with and array of audio, video and other multimedia features. Again, we’ve seen these before in other digital publications, but Murdoch has attempted to beef them up by drawing on other areas of his media empire.
