Sabotka, the senior Democrat on the board of selectmen, will not seek re election this fall, in part because of what she calls poor communication by the first selectwoman.
Sabotka, 49, said Tuesday she thinks it is time for a change in the makeup of the board. During the past few years, she said, there has not been enough information shared with the board by Republican First Selectwoman Linda L. Roberts.
Sabotka said that with her departure, perhaps there will be an opportunity for someone else to be elected who can make things work more smoothly.
Since the 1997 election of Roberts as first selectwoman, Sabotka said she has been finding out about things later than she should.
It’s difficult to put your finger on it,” said Sabotka, who has been a board member for 10 years. There are a lot of decisions being made without the full knowledge of the board.”
In the past, decisions have been handled by the board as a whole, Sabotka said.
She had concerns, for example, when town officials were considering whether to seek a state prison facility in East Windsor.
Sabotka said she learned of the proposal through rumors. When she asked Roberts for documentation about it, Sabotka said she received a copy of a letter from the state Department of Correction confirming the town’s interest.

After a public hearing seeking comment from residents last year, the board decided not to pursue a prison facility.

Roberts said she believes she and Sabotka have always worked well together.

Sabotka said she believes it’s important to contribute and she will see where else she can help out. That may be other boards or possibly commissions in the future.
