The Star editorial board invited the candidates in the special election for Congressional District 8 to share their thoughts on leadership and related topics.

We present their written responses today and for the next two Sundays. We have not edited the answers except for Air Jordan 14s punctuation and to conform to our copy style.

Republican Jesse Kelly’s campaign did not respond to our invitations.

Voter registration closes on May 14 at midnight, and early voting begins May 17. Election day is June 12.

Excluding relatives or employers, what living leader do you most admire and why?

The world leaders I most admire fight for democracy, persevere in the face of great odds and are willing to fight for their people no matter what consequences they may face.

That’s why I admire Nobel Peace Prize recipient Aung San Suu Kyi. She has spent decades working Air Jordan 12s to democratize Burma (Myanmar), and 15 years under house arrest for her efforts. Separated from her family, she did not give up despite years of persecution and recently won a seat in Parliament.

Whatever differences we have in America Suu Kyi’s story reminds us of the importance of two principles of our democracy the right to vote, the right to speak out.

She also reminds us of the type of leadership we need. We could use more leaders like her in America and throughout the world who have the courage to stand up for their convictions and their community no matter what.

Charlie Manolakis, Green Party

Former President Bill Clinton because he contributed greatly to the common good and prosperity of the country.

One of his greatest accomplishments was to bring about a budget surplus for three years in a row. He was the only president that has ever been able to achieve this accomplishment. Jobs and good, substantial wages for the times were quite plentiful during his leadership.

He did much to open the possibilities and potential for educational opportunities.

His development of AmeriCorps (America’s Peace Corps) has done a lot with protecting our environment and using our natural resources.

He now, with the Clinton Institute, does much to meet pressing challenges all over the world.

I plan to follow through with his leadership and inspiration as your representative in Congress.

To whom do you turn for advice and why? Again, please exclude family and employers.

The people of Congressional District 8 offer the most practical advice. I learned this during my years as district director of CD8.

Ranchers and residents of border communities best understand how we can improve border security their advice has been critical to forming my position on this issue.

Seniors have paid into Medicare and Social Security all their lives and rely on them in retirement. It’s their concerns that drive my commitment to protect these programs and my promise never to vote to privatize them.

From veterans and military families, I’ve learned about the improvements we need to make in caring for those who’ve put their lives on the line for our country.

It’s our small business owners who know how we can bring jobs to the community and restart our local economy.

I will continue to listen to, Air Jordan DMP and take Nike Air Foamposite One advice from, Southern Arizonans if I am fortunate enough to represent them in Congress.

We must listen to the advice of the great philosopher Sylvester Stallone: You got to do what you got to do! (And I can second that!)

Or as the great Nike always tells me “Just do it!” And I will!

Of course there is another famed philosopher, who holds if you come to a fork in the road, take it! And it ain’t over until it’s over! (Yogi Berra)

I am of Greek, Irish and Scot ethnic origin. Scots are famed for their pragmatism. And in the seeking of advice, pragmatism is one good way Air Jordan 23s to seek it.
