Sergio Conceicao, currently playing for Greek side PAOK, was a regular presence for the Portuguese national team until the appointment of Luiz Felipe Scolari as coach of the Selecao Air Jordan 12s in 2003, and had some interesting words to say about the coach.
“How am I going to talk about a man that arrived in Portugal, left without winning anything and is still highly regarded?” Conceicao told ionline.
“I was [at Portugal under Scolari] for nine months, but the first meeting with the captains myself, [Fernando] Couto, [Luis] Figo and Rui Costa was enough to understand him.
“He called us to one side and told us he was there to coach the national team and then jump to a big European side.
“But Air Jordan 3s are we kidding or Air Jordan 4s what? What is this? A man in the national team, which must be a privilege, the biggest of privileges, and he was only thinking about leaving to a big in Europe?
“He spoke of seriousness and discipline. In fact, he cast away charismatic players, like [Vitor] Baia and Joao Pinto, based on discipline. That is all very pretty, but he did not apply the rule.
“During the national team’s lunches, the players’ table is always bigger than the staff’s, because there are more players than staff. But with Air Jordan 6s Scolari no!
“Our table had 18/20 people. His table was bigger. But are we kidding? But where are we?
“He always took his Brazilian friends, his Nike friends. Yes, because he is sponsored Nike KD 7 by Nike and between a player sponsored by Nike and one sponsored by Adidas, he always picked the one with Nike.”
